Why Choose McAfee for Home Use?

It used to be that the home PC was the only smart device in the house; those days are long gone. McAfee Home Network Security software covers your entire device horde, and the coverage is cross-platform.

The Windows edition of the software is a robust offer that toes the line of being classified as a security suite.

Android customers will also enjoy powerful coverage that's above-average standards. Security features for the Mac and iOS devices are limited, but the overall value of being able to cover all your devices in one plan is this software's best selling point.

Pros

  • Received a good score for malware detection from the AV-Test Institute
  • Robust firewall
  • Package includes Ransom Guard, PC Boost, and loads more bonus features
  • Protection for all your devices (Mac, iOS, Windows, and Android) under one plan

Features

McAfee Home Network Security is a comprehensive security solution if you're looking for software that will protect you from malware, phishing, ransomware attacks, port scans, or firewall bridges.

Malware Detection

All of McAfee's security software packages come with malware detection that scans for known threats. Also, it uses cloud computing and machine learning to detect new issues ensuring that your mobile device or desktop at home is safe.

Phishing Detection

The software's detection of Trojan sites is among the best in its class. Subscribers receive a daily update notifying them that their devices are safe from potential hackers trying to steal data.

Ransom Guard

McAfee Home Network Security software comes with a ransomware detector called Ransom Guard that runs in the background. At the slightest hint of an attempt to create encrypted files, it creates backup files of the encryption and cranks up its monitoring.

Firewall Protection

McAfee's firewall protection comes with all of its plans. Smart Access mode AI flags port intrusion attacks without any intervention on your part. You can focus on doing what you need to do, and McAfee will handle your online security.

Crypto Jacker Blocker

Cryptojacking is a subtle form of ransomware. The latter is more abusive, and the former is more sophisticated as it steals system resources for crypto mining purposes. The Crypto-Jacking blocker piggybacks off of WebAdvisor, working in real-time to stop websites from stealing your system resources.

QuickClean

Quick clean eliminates necessary files, duplicates, caches, and other miscellaneous temp files on your system. There's not much to this feature. It does what it's intended to do.

Performance and Protection

We found that our McAfee Home Security suite is generally slower than its closest competitors. A test done by AV-Test Institute lab reported an 8.9% lag for quick scan versus other security suites and a staggering 19.8% for a full scan test.

While its competitors may have the upper hand on malware detection and prevention, its phishing and ransomware detection features reported back 100% successful blocks against penetration tests done by the guys over at AV-Test Institute.

Hands down, the biggest drawback has to be the suite’s performance speeds for scans. We still recommend the software for home users as it ranks up there with the best security software vendors in the marketplace.

On a more upbeat note, the phishing and ransomware protection that McAfee comes with is among the best. When tested, it scored a perfect 100 for both categories. Couple this with the fact that the software license comes with complete device protection.

It's clear to see that McAfee, by far, is the best choice for you if you're looking for security software protection across multiple platforms.

Privacy and Security

The guys over at McAfee have been working really hard to improve their product. It comes as no surprise that the software plans all come with an unlimited VPN service.

The parental control feature is also worth mentioning. On Windows, the program performs well. However, the Mac and iOS versions still need improvement. The password manager is also a nifty feature that comes with the home plan.

Overall, we’re happy about the privacy features.

Pricing Plans

McAfee has four pricing tiers: single device, individual and couples, family, and ultimate. Below is a price breakdown of each package.

PriceSingle DeviceIndividual and CouplesFamilyUltimate
$34.99$39.99$44.99$69.99

The single plan covers only one device yearly at $34.99. The individual and couples plan covers one to five devices a year at $40. For $45, you and your family can enjoy security for a whole year under the McAfee for Home plan, which covers up to 10 devices. For $69.99 annually, you can cover an unlimited amount of devices.

Ease of Use and Interface

McAfee's home use program’s latest interface is more streamlined than previous iterations. It offers consolidated defense for PC, Web, and Personal Identity. Each of the three categories has its own menu that you can select when you start the application on your device.

When you click on the PC category, you’ll get Antivirus, Firewall, Secure Apps, and App Boost. Click on the Web Page category, and you’ll find: Browser Security, Web Boost, Tracker Remover, and Secure VPN.

Lastly, under Identity, there’s ID Protection, Password Manager, File Shredder, and File Lock.

You may notice that other McAfee staple features are missing, such as the vulnerability scan, Network Analyzer, and the spam filter.

All you have to do is click the Settings gear, and you can see all of McAfee’s features.

How to Set it Up and Uninstall

Installing the software isn't complicated at all. All you need to do is activate your registration code online. Once you have done that, download the installation software onto your device.

The installation process is quick and uses a wizard to guide you through the process. Upon finishing, you then have to restart your device so the program can start doing its magic.

It’s important to note that when you download the product, you’ll receive a serial number that is distinct from your activation code. Keep it safe as you may need to reinstall the product on the same device.

To complete the setup process, follow the installation prompts for Web Advisor on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.

Uninstalling the program is easy. Go to your control panel, select Managed Programs, and then choose Install/Uninstall Programs. Choose the suite you want to uninstall.

Is McAfee The Right Choice for Home and Family Use?

If you’re in the market for an antivirus that performs at industry standards and isn’t particularly concerned about processing speed, try McAfee Total Protection for Home.

Essential protection for Mac, iOS, and Android is no different on McAfee Total Protection than the introductory antivirus offer, but you do get other apps for these platforms. Up to five family members can use the password manager on all of their devices, and you can also install Safe Parental Control on Windows and mobile phones and tablets.

On top of the features mentioned above, you also get identity protection on all your devices, plus a no-limits VPN.

Our final verdict is that you get your money's worth and then some with McAfee. Now, go ahead and find the right version for you.
